Monroe County sheriff: Bicyclist dies from crash injuries

A Dundee man injured last week in a collision with a car in Ida Township has died, the Monroe County Sheriff's Office reported Monday.

Brian L. Ochs, 58, was injured in the crash that happened at 6:38 a.m. Thursday on Ida West Road west of Riggs Street, the sheriff's office said.

Preliminary investigation showed Ochs was riding a Mongoose Domain bicycle eastbound on Ida West Road in the middle of the eastbound lane of travel, the sheriff's office said last week. While in motion, Ochs was struck by a 2017 Chevrolet Impala operated by Cole R. Domanski, 24, of Deerfield.

Deputies said Domanski drove left of center to pass Ochs when the bicyclist veered toward the center of the roadway sideswiping the car. Ochs then fell from his bicycle and came to rest in the eastbound ditch of Ida West Road. Domanski then stopped.

Ochs was transported to ProMedica Toledo Hospital for treatment of his injuries. He was not wearing a helmet, deputies said. Domanski was wearing his seat belt and was not injured. Speed and alcohol were not factors in the crash, deputies added.

The crash remains under investigation by Sgt. Brian Quinn and Deputy Sheriffs Alec Preadmore and Nicholas Burkhart of the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Services Division.
