More than 40 people, including 25 children, took part in the Monroe Kiwanis Club’s Christmas party, held recently at the Salvation Army.

The annual event hasn’t been held in two years because of the pandemic. The event began in 2008.

Attending were residents of the Salvation Army Campus of Hope in Monroe.

The evening included pizza, cookie decorating, gifts and a visit from Santa and one of his elves. Jets Pizza of Monroe, a longtime supporter of the party, donated food again this year.

Ryan Kane, chairman of the Kiwanis Youth Services Committee, chaired this year’s event. Committee and club members volunteer their time to share and interact with the children.

“Sitting side-by-side with these children and seeing the smiles on their faces, especially when Santa arrives, is probably the most rewarding project for the club,” Kane said.

Tamyka Tucker, shelter director and club member, also helped with the event.

The club also supports local Special Olympics, Salvation Army bellringing and Holiday Camp, Katie Burroughs, current president, said.
