Monroe man changing tire dies in apparent roadside hit-and-run in town of Newburgh

A man changing a tire by the side of the road died, apparently after he was hit by a passing driver who did not stop, town of Newburgh police said Friday.

Police responded to Old Little Britain Road near the intersection with Unity Place at 7:50 a.m. Friday after receiving a report of an unconscious man in the road.

Police said they found the man next to a 2007 Suzuki Reno that had broken down and was facing west on the shoulder of the road.

Police said a preliminary investigation appeared to show the man, identified as Walter Weiser, 65, of Monroe, was attempting to change his tire.

Town police said officers and Town of Newburgh Emergency Medical Services personnel attempted to render aid to Weiser, but he was later pronounced dead.

Police said it appeared Weiser might have been struck by a passing vehicle that did not stop.

Police are canvassing the area for cameras with footage from before and after Weiser was hit.

Police are asking for anyone who might have been in the area at that time and anyone who has dash camera footage that might help the investigation to call the detective division at 845-564-1100.

The Goodwill Fire Department and Mobile Life Support Services also assisted town police at the scene, and state police reconstruction experts are assisting with the investigation.
