A Monroe Middle School student died from injuries she suffered after reportedly jumping from a moving car driven by her mother in Southgate.

Monroe Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Julie Everly identified the victim as Angelina Jones, 14, an eighth-grade student at MMS.

"There are no words to express the loss of this sweet girl who had her whole life ahead of her," Everly said in a note to the community. "She touched students and staff with her gentle spirit, kind heart and bright smile. She is also dearly remembered by teachers and staff at Custer and Arborwood elementary schools where she attended first grade."

The Southgate Police Department reported the incident occurred around 7:30 p.m. on Sunday April 17. Preliminary investigation revealed that the mother, 33, of Monroe was driving with her two daughters as passengers northbound on Fort Street near Pennsylvania Road.

Police said the mother and Angelina were allegedly arguing when the teen jumped out of the moving vehicle leading to Angelina suffering serious injuries. She initially was listed in critical condition but died from her injuries on Wednesday, police said.

According to police, the mother was arrested for suspicion of operating under the Influence and was later released pending toxicology results.

"Our detectives are working with the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office and will submit a formal warrant request to them once all of the evidence has been collected and the investigation is complete," a press release stated.

Monroe's Everly said Angelina had recently returned to the Monroe community after spending several years in Wayne County. She said Angelina was well-loved by many.

"As we grieve together, our focus as a district is to provide support to our students and staff," Everly said. "Extra members of our district social-emotional team will be present at Monroe Middle School to address student questions and needs for support."

Everly added that counselors and social workers will be available to any students or staff wishing to speak with someone at school.

A GoFundMe account also has been created for the Jones family. A girl identified on the account as Chelsea Jones wrote on behalf of the Jones family that the fundraiser was started to assist the family.

"As the result of a tragic accident, we are saddened with heavy and broken hearts by the passing of Angelina Hope Jones," Chelsea wrote. "At the very young age of 14, Angelina was a daughter, granddaughter, sister, niece, cousin, and friend to many. She lit up every room she walked into with her beautiful blue eyes, huge smile and glow. Angelina will truly be missed and has been a blessing to many, especially her family."
