Monroe Records More Than 140 Coronavirus Cases In A Week

MONROE, CT — Reported coronavirus cases and hospitalizations are moving downward in Connecticut, but the state also had a particularly bad week for deaths.

The Connecticut coronavirus death toll grew by 241 in the past week to a total of 9,683 lives lost.

Monroe had 197.4 average daily cases per 100,000 residents and a positive test rate of 27.10 percent between Jan. 2-15, according to the state Department of Public Health. There were 244 average daily cases per 100,000 residents in the previous two-week reporting period. It’s important to note that a few cases can have a large impact on a municipal case rate, especially for small towns.

Monroe recorded 141 new coronavirus cases between Jan. 14-20, according to DPH’s preliminary data.

Around 74 percent of Monroe residents are fully vaccinated against the coronavirus as of Jan. 19, according to DPH.

Monroe First Selectman Ken Kellogg issued the following coronavirus update Friday afternoon:

CASE RATES
• While high case rates continue across the state, the number of cases, positivity rate, and hospitalizations have declined. In Monroe, after peaking at an average of 47 cases per day, we are currently averaging 38 per day.
• We continue to encourage use of masks when indoors in public spaces while we all continue to manage through this omicron wave.

RAPID SELF-TEST KIT DISTRIBUTION
• While we currently do not expect to receive any additional tests for distribution to the general public, tests have been in stock recently at local pharmacies.
• Additionally, every household may order 4 free test kits by mail from the US Postal Service. Please use the link on the COVID-19 page on our website.
• We are in the process of receiving additional test kits for distribution to vulnerable populations. While we have already done significant outreach through our Community & Social Services department, any resident who has challenges obtaining a test due to issues with mobility, disability, or lack of transportation may contact the Monroe Health Department for assistance starting Monday at 9:00 AM at 203-452-2818.

VACCINATION BOOSTERS
• We continue to work directly with Monroe Public Schools to provide initial and booster vaccinations. In the near future, the Superintendent of Schools will be sending details to the school community regarding an upcoming clinic for students.
• As the overall demand for boosters in the general population has decreased significantly, along with many other providers having ample capacity, our January 25th booster clinic will be our last scheduled public clinic at this time.
