Monroeville man arrested for alleged shooting during road rage incident

A Monroeville man was arrested for an alleged shooting during a road rage incident Sunday.

Matthew Alfaro, 23, is behind bars. Alfaro was charged with several crimes including two counts of felony aggravated assault, one count of felony carrying a firearm without a license and reckless endangerment.

Police say this started as a road rage incident on Monroeville Boulevard, right outside of the Monroeville Police Department. The victim said he accidentally cut off Alfaro, who was in a silver Chevy Malibu, just before 5 p.m. on Sunday. He says Alfaro followed him and gestured for him to pull over. The victim said he thought he lost the silver car, but it reappeared and he “heard a loud popping sound and felt a sharp burning pain on the right side of his back.”

The victim raced to the nearby Turtle Creek Police Department where he went inside and told officers he had been shot. The victim was rushed to Forbes. The bullet is still lodged in his back. According to court documents, doctors “did not want to perform surgery due to more damage possibly being done to him.”

License plate readers were analyzed and showed the silver Chevy Malibu registered to Matthew Alfaro turning around in a hair salon parking lot. The victim was given a line-up of eight suspects, and he picked Alfaro.

“That’s just awful,” Gail Griffith told Channel 11. “I think people need to just take a step back, breathe, collect themselves before they start acting on impulse.”

“It’s just not worth it,” Chris Morgan added. “You pull a gun, you have a lot of questions to answer. I don’t see any need to do that. Just argue it out and go home!”

As of Monday afternoon, Alfaro is still waiting to be arraigned. He also had a warrant for failing to appear in court in Penn Hills at the time of his most recent arrest.
