Monroeville routs Vanlue for sectional title

May 14—MONROEVILLE — As the No. 10 seed in the Division IV Shelby district, visiting Vanlue came out swinging in Thursday's sectional championship game at top-seeded Monroeville.

But it was the Eagles who landed all the big swings after Vanlue (6-13) was retired in the top half of the first. The Eagles scored 19 runs on 17 hits over their first four innings en route to a 19-2 win in five innings at Clark Park.

With the win, Monroeville (21-5) advanced to a 4 p.m. district semifinal matchup against Firelands Conference foe and No. 3-seeded Plymouth (16-7), who it visits on Friday in a rescheduled conference game.

The Wildcats got a leadoff walk and a double to score a run in the top of the first, and a second run came across to score on a passed ball for a 2-0 lead.

From there, however, the Eagles responded with nine extra-base hits to pull away with ease. Five players finished with multiple hits for Monroeville, led by Abbi Poths and starting pitcher Payton Scheid.

Poths finished 3 for 4 with three doubles while driving in two runs and scoring three times. Scheid was 3 for 4 with two triples, five RBIs and also scored three times.

Also for the Eagles, Callie Rossser was 3 for 4 with two doubles, an RBI and four runs scored. Sydney Meisler and Lydia Landoll each had two hits and an RBI, and Brooklyn Schaffer singled with two RBIs, while Grace Tonelli doubled with an RBI and Adelynn Kradlak singled with an RBI.

In the circle, Scheid allowed the two runs (one earned) on two hits with nine strikeouts and one walk.
