Monroeville teams sweep top two spots

Mar. 6—MONROEVILLE — The Ohio Aerospace Institute hosted a robotics tournament recently at the NASA facility in Cleveland.

The tournament was attended by several schools across the state. Students had the opportunity to demonstrate their robotics skills, interact with aerospace industry professionals and the kids were inspired by the guest speaker Josh Dobbs, the NFL quarterback for the Tennessee Titans who also has a degree in aerospace engineering.

The students enjoyed hearing from the quarterback about his experience with Pratt & Whitney and NASA while he was a student.

During the NASA tournament, each of the robotics teams competed in 6 matches during the qualification rounds. The top 20 teams then moved on to compete in finals. For the teamwork challenge, there are two teams on the field working together to get the most points scored during each 60-second match.

Each team has two team members driving for their team, and about the 30-second mark the robot's remote control gets passed from the first driver to the second.

Monroeville Local Schools sent 6 elementary teams to the NASA tournament. Overall, Monroeville teams won 1st and 2nd place in the teamwork challenge.

Team 14163G, consisting of Cade Gerber, Easton Clark and Trindan Smithson, placed first at the tournament.

Team 14163D, consisting of Cole Myers and Aidan Schaffer, placed second.
