Monroeville tops Plymouth to stay alive in FC race

Apr. 30—MONROEVILLE — The Monroeville softball team broke a tie for third place in the Firelands Conference and stayed in the title race picture with Friday's 14-8 win over visiting Plymouth at Clark Park in Monroeville.

The Eagles improved to 15-5 overall and 7-3 in the FC, which is two games off the pace from South Central (14-2, 7-1) and Crestview (11-4, 8-1). Monroeville hosts South Central on Monday and visits the Trojans on Tuesday next week, while the Cougars and Trojans also play once more on May 6.

Taryn Tyler was 2-for-4 with a double and four RBIs for the Eagles, while Veanna Helmstetter, Brooklyn Schaffer, Emily Scheid and Ava Krueger all had three-hit days.

Emily Scheid and Helmstetter combined on the victory in the circle. In 5 1/3 innings, Scheid allowed three earned runs on seven hits with three strikeouts and two walks. Helmstetter recorded the final five outs and allowed two unearned runs on two hits with two strikeouts and a walk.

Kaela Plank and Chloe Trine were each 3-for-3 at the plate for Plymouth (7-7, 6-4).

South Central 14, Lucas 4

LUCAS — The Trojans improved to 14-2 with Friday's non-league win over the host Cubs.

South Central — which has a doubleheader vs. Galion Northmor on Saturday — got three hits each from Kaylee Richards, Olivia Hudson and Maddy Prater. Hudson drove in two runs, while Richards and Prater each had one RBI, with Richards also adding a triple.

Also for the Trojans, Annie Cook was 2-for-3 with a double and drove in a pair, and Makena Calame was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Tabby Sherer and E. Richards each singled and drove in two.

Prater went four innings for the win, allowing one earned run on one hit with eight strikeouts and two walks.

VERMILION — McKenna Ames homered and doubled to lead the Truckers (6-11, 4-5) to a bounce-back SBC Lake victory.

Callie Helton added two hits for Norwalk, which got 10 strikeouts in the circle from Haley Gockstetter for a complete-game win.

Port Clinton 10, St. Paul 3

NORWALK — Alliyah Wharton hit the 11th home run of her Port Clinton career to tie her older sister Aubrey's school record. Wharton finished 3-for-4 to lead PC (3-11) past St. Paul, which fell to 1-14 with the loss.

Josalyn Vazquez was 2-for-3 with a triple and scored two of the three runs for St. Paul. Brooke Houck was also 2-for-3 and finished with a pair of RBIs.

NEW LONDON — The Wildcats fell to 6-9 overall and 3-7 in the league with Friday's FC loss to the Cougars.

Madison Rowland was 2-for-3 with a triple and two RBIs for the 'Cats, while Emilee Rowland added two hits and an RBI.

Emilee Rowland went all seven innings. She allowed seven runs (five earned) on nine hits with 10 strikeouts and two walks.

COLLINS — The Roughriders were held to a pair of base hits by Sydnie Prince and Lacey Greszler in Thursday's Firelands Conference loss to the Cougars.

Greszler scored the lone run for Western (3-11, 1-8), with Brooklyn Prince credited with the RBI.
