Monster Pumpkin Fest returns to Pittsburgh’s Strip District

The Monster Pumpkin Fest returned to Pittsburgh’s Strip District on Sunday.

It’s a festival that features some of the largest pumpkins of the year.

This year, pumpkins weighing more than a ton were presented at the festival. There were 10 in that weight category.

One pumpkin weighed 2,400 pounds and now holds the state record. According to our partners at TribLIVE.com, that pumpkin was grown by Eric Gunstrom of Harrison City.

Most of the large pumpkins are moved with forklifts and carefully set onto trailers of strapped-in flatbed trucks.

A popular feature at the festival is when one of the pumpkins weighing more than 2000 pounds gets lifted 200 feet in the air with a crane and dropped into a pool.

“It’s been awesome. The food has been great, pumpkins are huge, displays are really impressive, and I have seen a lot of cool, nifty things for sale,” said Matthew Stoff, a festival visitor.
