Monster Truck Nitro Tour crushes its way to the James Brown Arena

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) – Fans of monster trucks, get ready to start your engines because there’s a big event happening this weekend.

The James Brown Arena is laying down dirt and is being transformed for the Monster Truck Nitro Tour.

“This is the Monster Truck Nitro Tour brought to you by Chancey’s Wrecker Services. Those folks are bringing all of the junk cars that you’re going to see us crush into the ground. How are we going to crush them into the ground? With six big bad monster trucks in three huge events over our two shows,” said Announcer Jason Ellins.

The family friendly event is happening on February 3rd and there will be plenty to do.

“Doors open at 12, we go right in to a pit party where you get to meet the drivers, get autographs, take a ride on the wild side in a real monster truck, and then that show starts at 1:30, and then the very next show doors open at 6 and we go in to a pit party again and then the show starts at 7:30 and we go in to those big events. Two wheel skill. These monster trucks put it on the front two tires, back two tires, side two tires. Whatever it takes to make the crowd go crazy,” said Ellins.

One of the drivers was kind enough to let us get behind the wheel.

Cameron, how long have you been driving for?

“About two years now,” said Driver Cameron Tweedy.

What made you decide to get into this kind of thing?

“I’ve been driving my whole entire life. My dad bought our first truck when I was about a year old and we’ve just been up and running ever since,” said Tweedy.

What’s it like when you get out there and hear the crowd cheering for you.

“It’s pretty wild, I always say that I go blank, I don’t really know what’s going on, as soon as I shift into second gear I go into a mindset and I’m just out there doing my thing,” said Tweedy.

Of course we had to see what it was like riding in a Monster Truck before we left.

“This truck is different from the one you were just looking at. This truck was built back in the 1980’s, where it was all bare frame, five ton axles , and over the course of a few years it has turned into a ride along experience for fans who want to know what its like to ride in a monster truck. I get to go out there, I get to sling a couple of donuts and even though from the stands it doesn’t look like we’re going fast it feels like you’re going 70 miles per hour in a small arena ” said Driver Austin Spence.

The drivers and crew are excited to perform in the James Brown Arena.

“This is our last time in this building for two years because they are tearing it down and they’re building y’all and all new arena, it’s going to be amazing. So we’re coming in with the mindset that we are going to do the best, biggest and wildest show they’ve ever seen in the James Brown Arena,” said Ellins.
