Frankie Montas led the Oakland Athletics to an eighth straight win in MLB on Saturday.
Suspended for 80 games last season after testing positive to a performance-enhancing substance, Montas continued his return to prominence with another fine performance in a 3-1 victory over the Houston Astros.
The 27-year pitched seven scoreless innings and struck out five, while Marcus Semien hit a homer in the first inning for the AL West leaders.
Gerritt Cole struck out 10 Tampa Bay Rays batters before being pulled a single out short of qualifying for a 20th successive regular-season win, but the New York Yankees still claimed an 8-4 victory in the opening game of their doubleheader.
They had considerably less success in the second game, suffering a 5-3 defeat and losing Giancarlo Stanton to a hamstring injury.
Manager Aaron Boone and hitting coach Marcus Thames were both ejected.
Soler steals the show
Jorge Soler blasted two homers in back-to-back innings to light up the Kansas City Royals' 9-6 win over the Minnesota Twins.
Jake Arrieta threw six shutout innings to help secure the Philadelphia Phillies a dominant 5-0 win against the Atlanta Braves.
J.D. Davis hammered a crucial three-run homer in the seventh inning to inspire the New York Mets to an 8-4 victory over the Miami Marlins.
Meanwhile, Juan Soto homered for the first time this season - and tied Mickey Mantle for the eighth-most opposite-field shots before the age of 22 - but the Washington Nationals lost 5-3 against the Baltimore Orioles.
No relief for Nationals
Austin Voth's strong start for the Nationals came to nothing against the Orioles after relievers Sean Doolittle and Daniel Hudson gave up three homers between them. Doolittle went the distance on consecutive pitches.
Bryce Harper played his part for the Phillies with a stunning diving catch.
