Montclair High School Rowing Team Roars To Victory At NJ States

MONTCLAIR, NJ — Montclair High School’s Rowing Team is racing against the best in New Jersey, and has once gain taken gold at the the Garden State Scholastic Championships. And it's gotten their spring 2022 season off to an impressive start.

Last weekend, the MHS rowing team took gold in the Garden State Scholastic Championships in Camden after the tournament's two-year hiatus due to the pandemic, matching up against more than 45 New Jersey high schools and 240 boats (see team photos in the gallery above).

In Montclair rowing tradition, they were a clear standout, with nine of their 10 boats reaching the finals and seven walking away with medals, including four more state championship golds, one silver and two bronze finishes. This now makes 61 state championship titles in their program arsenal, and puts them in strong position for Nationals on May 27.

The team has continued to row through the pandemic, and competed at other regattas during the Garden State Scholastic Championships' hiatus. But it was good to get back to familiar ground, according to head coach Jeremy Michalitsianos.

“We are so happy to be racing at states again,” Michalitsianos said. “It’s been a tough couple of years for our athletes and our sport with Covid’s stops and starts, and we are extremely proud of the entire team for their performance [at the Garden State Scholastic Championships].”

Michalitsianos said the team trained hard, and winning four state championship titles is a well-deserved feather in their cap.

“The boys winning the points trophy for the third time in Montclair history is also a proud accomplishment for us,” Michalitsianos said. “Now we set our sights on Philadelphia Cities, Stotesbury and SRAA Nationals.”

The Montclair High School Rowing Team has a history of winning national and international championships, a huge feat for a public high school rowing team that routinely competes in a landscape of prestigious, privately funded prep schools and clubs.

The program celebrates its 20-year anniversary this year. To follow their schedule, learn more or sign up for any of their rowing programs, visit www.friendsofmontclairrowing.com.

Registration is also now open for Montclair Rowing’s Summer Camp program, open to all Montclair Public School students interested in learning more about the sport. For questions, reach out to coach Lorna Rundle at lornarundle@hotmail.com.
