MONTCLAIR, NJ — Gov. Phil Murphy’s latest school masking announcement got a round of applause from the state’s largest teachers union on Monday.

Murphy said the mask mandate for students and staff in New Jersey's schools and daycare facilities will continue “for the foreseeable future.” It was set to expire Tuesday.

But how long that extension will last is up for debate, as state lawmakers have said they won't grant a full 90-day extension of the governor's emergency powers amid a spike in COVID-19 cases.

Three officials with the New Jersey Education Association (NJEA) – including Montclair Mayor Sean Spiller, who serves as the union’s president – issued a joint statement praising the decision on Monday.

Spiller, vice president Steve Beatty and secretary-treasurer Petal Robertson wrote:

“We are pleased that Gov. Murphy has committed to this common-sense step to keep public school students and staff safer during this current COVID surge. Everyone is eager for the day that masks and other COVID safety measures are no longer necessary and the best way to achieve that is for New Jersey to continue following all of the school safety measures currently recommended for schools, including masking, social distancing and vaccination for all who are eligible. NJEA will continue to advocate for the measures that are necessary to keep students safe, healthy and learning and that put our state in the best position to finally emerge from this pandemic. We are proud to work with a governor who shares our commitment to protecting our students and providing the safest possible learning environment for them at this challenging time.”

In a Jan. 6 statement, the three union officials pressured Senate President Steve Sweeney and Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin to extend the school mask mandate in the Legislature.

They wrote:

“We are appalled at the idea that any member of the New Jersey Legislature would fail to support an extension of the mask mandate in our public schools that has helped protect students and staff during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. At a time when cases are surging and schools across New Jersey are struggling to remain open for in-person instruction, it is beyond irresponsible to let that vital safety measure lapse when it is supported by health, science, and common sense. Under current conditions, legislators should be looking for every opportunity to protect students and staff and help ensure that they can learn in the safest possible environment despite the staggering number of COVID cases New Jersey is experiencing. It is educational malpractice to ignore public health experts and to allow this important protection to lapse.”

Spiller, Beatty and Robertson continued:

“Throughout this pandemic, we have called on the state and local school districts to follow the guidance of public health experts, which overwhelmingly recommends masking as a critical COVID-prevention measure. The failure to include this basic step to protect children would be dangerous, irresponsible and demonstrates a callous disregard for the health of the students and staff of New Jersey’s public schools. We call on Senate President Sweeney and Assembly Speaker Coughlin to step up and lead on this critical issue by ensuring that New Jersey’s school masking mandate stays in place until public health officials agree that it can safely be modified or removed. Until then, it is up to the 120 members of the New Jersey Legislature to join Gov. Murphy in ensuring that our schools are as safe as possible for all students and staff.”
