One thing most people were thankful for this Thanksgiving was the opportunity to once again gather with family.

Holiday celebrations were limited by restrictions last year due to a rise in COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations during the fall and winter seasons. However, with vaccines and an end to shelter in place orders, travelers couldn't wait to hit the roads.

The American Automobile Association (AAA) initially predicted more than 53 million Americans would be traveling to see family on Thanksgiving. More than 7 million of those were Californians who traveled by plane, trains and roads, causing massive traffic backups seen statewide just before the big day.

As of Nov. 23, the county reported 75% of the population from age 5 and older has received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. Still, health officials say it's better to be on the safe side.

Right now, the Monterey County Health Department is recommending anyone who traveled for the holiday to get tested within five days after returning home. COVID symptoms can take two-14 days to show up.
