Montgomery 18-year-old identified as victim in city's latest fatal shooting

An 18-year-old has been identified as the victim of the city's latest fatal shooting.

Marium Mathew was killed Monday following a shooting after 8 a.m. in the 3700 block of Seaton Boulevard. The teen was pronounced dead on the scene.

Montgomery police Capt. Saba Coleman said police launched a death investigation into the shooting. Wednesday, the investigation remained as one.

The circumstances of the shooting remain under investigation and no more information regarding motive for the shooting were released.

Police ask anyone with information to call CrimeStoppers at 215-STOP, Secret Witness at 625-4000 or MPD at 625-2831.

Mathew is the sixth named victim of a death investigation this year, and the 67th person killed by gunfire.

In separating deaths into homicide and death investigations, Montgomery cites FBI Uniform Crime Reporting guidelines, which define criminal homicide as "Murder and non-negligent manslaughter: the willful (non-negligent) killing of one human being by another. Deaths caused by negligence, attempts to kill, assaults to kill, suicides and accidental deaths are excluded."

Justifiable homicides are classified separately. Sometimes, killings are classified as death investigations when not enough information is available to make a determination. At times, those classified as death investigations have been upgraded to homicide investigations.
