Montgomery County Coronavirus Totals: 2,280 Cases, 63 Deaths

SILVER SPRING, MD — Montgomery County's coronavirus cases have risen by 147 to 2,280 in the past 24 hours, the Maryland Department of Health announced on Friday.

Statewide, there are 11,572 known cases of COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus. A day earlier, the total stood at 10,784.

COVID-19 emerged in the Chinese city of Wuhan in late 2019 and has since infected more than 2,188,000 people and killed more than 147,500 around the world, according to the latest figures from Johns Hopkins University.

Maryland reported its first three coronavirus cases on March 5. As of Friday morning, 50,437 people have tested negative for the disease, 2,612 have been hospitalized, and 736 have been released from isolation.

Montgomery County has the second highest number of confirmed coronavirus cases. Prince George's County tops the list with 2,966 positive infections.

On Wednesday, the state began counting probable coronavirus deaths — which are deaths of people who likely had the new coronavirus, but died without being tested. Previously, deaths were only counted if they tested positive for the disease.

Maryland health officials are now reporting 425 confirmed deaths and 69 probable deaths. On Thursday, there were 392 confirmed deaths and 67 probable deaths.

In Montgomery County, officials say there are 63 confirmed deaths and 15 probable deaths. A day earlier, there were 56 confirmed deaths and 14 probable deaths.

On Sunday, the state began posting COVID-19 cases by ZIP code on its coronavirus page.

Silver Spring is one of the hardest hit areas in Montgomery County, according to the latest figures.
