A motorcyclist was killed Wednesday evening in a two-vehicle accident on Illinois 108 east of Carlinville in Montgomery County.

Ronald C. Schaaff, 49, of Carlinville was pronounced dead at Illinois 108 and East Second Road by the Montgomery County coroner.

Illinois State Police in a preliminary accident report said Schaaff was traveling west on Illinois 108 behind two other vehicles at 5:40 p.m. when the accident occurred. The lead vehicle, pulling a box trailer, was driven by Harold K. Schmidt, 57, also of Carlinville.

Police said Schaaff passed the middle vehicle as Schmidt, driving a truck, was turning left onto East Second Road.

Schaaff struck the rear of the box trailer being pulled by Schmidt, and was ejected from the motorcycle, according to police.

Schmidt claimed no injuries after the crash, police said.

The accident site is about 35 miles south of Springfield.

Illinois 108 was closed for approximately four hours after the accident, police said. The accident is under investigation.
