Montgomery owes tremendous debt to those who fell defending our nation

On Wednesday, we honored our veterans and active-duty service members who are still with us during a ceremony in which we launched the Montgomery Military & Veterans Commission. In doing so, we extended our commitment to doing all we can to support these courageous individuals. This is not just a formality; it is an actionable approach toward building a stronger city.

Now, as we enter Memorial Day weekend, we must remember the reason for this day and reflect upon the magnitude of sacrifices given by those who have died in defense of our country.

In communities across the nation, we will say prayers, hold memorial services and lift up lost loved ones. We will visit cemeteries, cherish fond memories and share stories of uncommon valor while holding those still with us a little bit closer. In Montgomery, our community is forever tied to military service; from the legendary Red Tails and the 187th Fighter Wing of the Alabama Air National Guard to thousands stationed at Maxwell-Gunter Air Force Base. These warriors and guardians of democracy work, live and contribute daily to our community. In uniform, they stand steadfast against the threats to America's peace and prosperity; but off-base and in our community, they are neighbors, coaches, church members, co-workers, friends and family. They are ready to protect — to lay down their lives — for all that we hold dear. Every loss cuts through the core of our city and leaves an indelible mark upon Montgomery.

We owe a tremendous debt to the more than 1.17 million brave men and women who fought and fell in defense of our nation. Their sacrifices were not made in vain, but in hopes that our country will continue to flourish. In return, leaders across the country are committed to working together to form a more perfect union and a better tomorrow for the American people.

We can never repay the debts owed to these intrepid individuals, but we can stand firm in faith in this country and uphold our promise to never forget the fallen. We can work together, putting politics aside, and promote policies to ensure America will always be the safest, freest and most equitable nation on Earth.

The bravery of our fallen heroes will always be remembered, just as we will comfort and support the loved ones they left behind. This Memorial Day, and every day, we honor the fallen.
