Montgomery Public Schools to go facemask-optional starting April 8

Montgomery Public Schools will make facemasks optional for students beginning on April 8.

April 8 is two weeks after the official end of MPS' spring break which runs March 21 to March 25.

In a letter sent to Montgomery parents and guardians on Friday, MPS Superintendent Dr. Ann Roy Moore said that recent improvement in COVID-19 trends has led to the change.

Montgomery Public School Superintendent Ann Roy Moore wrote that she recommends any student with immune or medical conditions continue to mask, but it is the parents' decision.

Moore wrote that she recommends any student with immune or medical conditions continue to mask, but it is the parents' decision. Students can continue masking and are advised — but not required — to wear the masks on the school bus.

"As always, our responsibility is to keep students safe and healthy," wrote Moore.

MPS may reverse the decision between now and the end of the school year.
