Montgomery Public Schools opens magnet applications

The application for the Montgomery Public Schools' magnet program opened Wednesday and will continue until Jan. 31 for the 2023-24 school year.

Magnet schools offer specialized instruction within the school system. Applicants will rank schools based on preferred admission.

Students who wish to enter a magnet program at the kindergarten or first grade level will need to take something called the Renaissance STAR test and meet a certain score, depending on the school. MPS may also ask transfer and older students to take a test.

Older students must also submit transcripts, which must be received by 4 p.m. on Feb 14.

The testing window for kindergarten and first grade is Feb. 6-10. Testing for grades 2-12 are scheduled for Feb. 27 and March 3.

Students applying for an arts magnet typically are asked to provide supplementary materials. Performance assessments will take place on Feb. 11 and March 4 for the art magnets at Booker T. Washington Magnet High School and Baldwin Arts and Academics Magnet School.

Students who meet all the requirements for admittance will have their names entered into a lottery for first and then second choice. The first magnet lottery will take place on March 16. The second lottery date has yet to be announced.

The application can be found on the magnet school portal at magnet.mps.k12.al.us
