Month-long closure planned for busy downtown intersection in Salt Lake City

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — The intersection of 200 South and West Temple in downtown Salt Lake City will be closed for an extended period as crews continue system maintenance work in the area.

The intersection, located near the new Hyatt Regency Hotel by the Salt Palace Convention Center, will be closed beginning Monday, April 1 and is expected to re-open in mid-May.

During the closure, crews with Dominion Energy, a natural gas company, will be working to replace a portion of a natural gas line as part of an ongoing maintenance project along 200 South.

Dominion Energy officials said the intersection will be open to right turns only to maintain business and parking garage access in the area. Additionally, 200 South between 200 West and West Temple will be closed as crews complete the replacement.

Detour routes around the construction will include 200 West, Main Street and State Street onto 300 South and South Temple.

Work to replace the infrastructure on 200 South began in Spring 2023 and is expected to be completed sometime in 2024, according to the project’s timeline. Dominion Energy said the improvements to the infrastructure are “necessary to keep pace with growing customer demand” and to maintain overall system integrity.

“Please drive carefully and obey all signs and flaggers,” Dominion Energy’s project site reads. “To avoid congestion in construction zones, motorists are advised to use alternate routes when possible and to allow plenty of travel time to get where they’re going. At all times, our crews will make every effort to maintain access to businesses and driveways in construction zones.”
