Fans were shocked when news broke that Chef Carl Ruiz had died last month at the age of 44. Now, his cause of death has been confirmed.

Bruce Goldfarb, with the office of the Maryland Department of Health's chief medical examiner, confirmed to Delish that Carl died of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. He passed away in his sleep in Maryland while visiting friends, according to the TODAY show.

Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease occurs when "the blood vessels that carry oxygen and nutrients from your heart to the rest of your body (arteries) become thick and stiff — sometimes restricting blood flow to your organs and tissues," according to the Mayo Clinic. It can be caused by high blood pressure and high cholesterol, among other things.

Carl died on September 21, and the news of his passing was confirmed via an Instagram post from La Cubana, the restaurant he had opened in New York City just a few months earlier.

"On behalf of the La Cubana family, with heavy hearts, we are deeply saddened to share the passing of our beloved Executive Chef Carl Ruiz. No words can fully express our sadness at the sudden loss of our dear friend and brother," the heartbreaking post began.

The chef often appeared on Food Network programs, and many of the network's stars posted photos in his memory, including Chopped judge Alex Guarneschelli and Carl's friend Guy Fieri. Carl appeared on Fieri's Food Network shows like Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives and Guy's Grocery Games.

"Over the years, I’ve met a lot of great people but a friend like Carl is one in a hundred million. Carl ’The Cuban’ Ruiz will forever live on in my heart and in those of all who loved him," the post said in part.
