It’s hockey in the desert heat on Wednesday, where Game 2 of the Stanley Cup semifinals between the Montreal Canadiens and the Golden Knights will unfold amid a brutal heat wave plaguing the southwestern United States. The temperature in Las Vegas, Nevada, could reach 47°C on Wednesday, smashing the record for the hottest temperature ever recorded outside while the National Hockey League (NHL) played a game.

Wednesday’s high in Las Vegas will smash the previous all-time high temperature for an NHL game. The previous record of 42°C was first set by the Arizona Coyotes during the 2012 Western Conference Finals, and tied by Game 1 between the Canadiens and Golden Knights this past Monday.

Playoffs usually wrap up by early June, but pandemic-related delays during the 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 hockey seasons pushed this season’s playoffs into the heat of the summer.

The addition of the Golden Knights in 2017 increases the likelihood of more NHL games playing while the arena roasts under the summer sun. The new team joins Phoenix’s Arizona Coyotes as the league’s second team based in a desert city, while future relocations and expansions could place more teams in warmer climates.

Plunging into such an intense heat wave is a rough change for Montreal. This is the first season where all seven Canadian teams played in the same division and remained in Canada for the duration of the season.

The coldest temperature during a Habs game this season bottomed-out at -24°C in Winnipeg on February 27, giving the team a temperature swing of more than 70°C between their coldest game and their hottest game this year.

The heat in Las Vegas won’t just smash the NHL’s heat record. The predicted high there on Wednesday would tie the all-time hottest temperature ever recorded in Las Vegas. This record-setting heat is part of the same upper-level ridge that brought high heat and humidity to the Prairies earlier this week.

It’s been particularly rough in the western United States, where many communities have broken daily and monthly high temperature records. The U.S. National Weather Service office in Salt Lake City, Utah, announced that the city on Tuesday tied its all-time high temperature record, and measured its hottest-ever June temperature, with an afternoon high of 41.6°C (107°F).
