Moon Knight spoilers follow.

Moon Knight asks us to embrace the chaos, and now fans of the show are asking Marvel to do the same. Because, as it stands right now, Disney has only commissioned Moon Knight as a limited series, ie a one-and-done deal.

But could that change? Moon Knight has been submitted in the category of Limited Series at the Emmys – just like Hawkeye was – but interestingly enough, an official tweet describing the trailer for season one's finale accidentally used the phrase "series finale" before replacing it with "season finale".

"I honestly have no idea," Moon Knight series head writer Jeremy Slater told The Playlist when asked if the show would return. "I haven’t had any conversations with Marvel. I think a lot of those decisions are ultimately going to be in the hands of Kevin Feige because he’s the guy with the master plan."

Feige has offered hope for more Moon Knight via an outpouring of love for Ms Marvel.

"I hope we learn something from every project," Feige told Culture Slate. "Kamala Khan, for instance, is a great new character in the pantheon. I’m very proud of the Ms Marvel show. I also know – and this is a spoiler – she essentially steals The Marvels, which is coming out July 28."

"It makes me excited that people will, I hope, see that movie and then go back and revisit those shows on Disney+. The fun thing about streaming is they are there forever, and people can keep re-exploring them. Moon Knight, same thing. I think there’s a future for that character as we move forward."

One potential drawback: in-demand Oscar Isaac is the star, and he’s not tied to a typical MCU-style contract, according to Slater.

"Oscar has the ability to do as much or as little Moon Knight as he wants to. I think he had a great time playing the character, and I think he really enjoyed the process and is happy he did it. But I also think he’s not a guy who’s going to rush in and just sort of churn out a sequel just because the first one was popular."

But the writer does see potential. According to Slater, the character’s complexity could easily drive a second season – and beyond.

"Everything is in service of the greater good. But is he going to be a friend? Is he an enemy? I think all those are really exciting questions for whoever takes up the reins. Whoever gets to tell the next Moon Knight story, whether that’s me or someone else, that is an exciting promise," Slater said (via Inverse). "This guy’s story is definitely not done."

And after the first two episodes aired on Disney+, writer Mohamed Diab told Collider that "Moon Knight is staying, staying for a long time." But even he isn't sure whether that means we're getting another season, or whether the Fist of Khonshu will simply show up somewhere else in the MCU instead.

Speaking to SFX Magazine, Diab expanded on his feeling that the character will definitely return to the MCU.

"If you ask me, I would tell you that Moon Knight is here to stay," Diab explained. "He's an interesting character. If you are Marvel, I think the smart business decision is to keep him. The only thing is, Marvel is not traditional. If you succeed, it doesn't mean you're gonna get a season two. By the way, I'm kept in the dark. I have no clue. I'm just thinking as a businessman right now. But I think they're going to stay.

"Maybe it's going to be a film. Maybe it's going to be a journey like what happened with WandaVision. I wish one day, if there is an expansion, I would be a part of it. We ended in a way that feels like a beginning. You see Mark and Steven becoming a new dynamic, the two of them in one body. We see Jake. You see the Scarlet Scarab, who could be a superhero or not. Very interesting stuff."

Moon Knight season 2 potential release date: When will it return on Disney+?

If Moon Knight is indeed not just a phase, then a second season will likely take at least a couple of years to appear. That's because Marvel is juggling more projects than Marc has personalities, so that means Moon Knight will have to get in line behind all of the other new and returning shows scheduled to arrive on Disney+.

Before Moon Knight made his Marvel debut, Oscar Isaac told Variety that he was "reticent" about joining the MCU. "I had heard of the golden handcuffs," he joked. "Luckily, we all agreed that this [show] is what we’re going to focus on. This is the story. And if there’s any kind of future, I think it just depends on if people like it, if people want to see more, and if we find a story that’s worth telling.

"I was in a position - because I wasn’t actively looking to get back into something this big - to say, 'This is how I see it, and if you guys don’t see it that way, that’s totally okay, but then maybe it’s not the right fit,'" he said. "And so I wasn’t afraid that I was going to do the wrong thing.

"I felt like there was an opportunity to do something super unusual, on a massive stage, with these incredible resources," Isaac told Deadline. "To find a way to do this strange character study and have this weird, psychedelic journey that's ultimately about trauma, and to do that within this genre and this framework just seemed like too good of an opportunity to pass up.

"You kind of pour your heart into the things that you do just for the sake of doing it - not even for the result. You put that stuff in there out of a sense of play, and a sense of fun and excitement because it means something to you, and whether that shows up literally on camera is kind of beside the point," Isaac explained.

"I think the idea is that it infuses depth. You just feel the depth of it. All the detail, all the texture, all of that stuff, someone in a rush — which you definitely were always in — you could kind of let that stuff fall to the side, especially when you have six hours of show to make, which is always just so wild. And to still find the space and the interest to infuse everything you could with some sort of meaning, it's just so great."

And since then, Isaac addressed the possibility of season two head on with The Radio Times, explaining: "I think we approached it as 'this is the story', and let's just put everything out on the table on this story. There’s definitely no official plans to continue it. I think it would depend on what the story is."

Not all hope is lost though, as Isaac went on to say: "That being said, I love being Steven. I just love it. It's just like, physically, it's so much fun to be him. So, you know, if there was a story that really made sense, I'd be happy to be part of it."

So if Oscar does return, he will likely be joined by May Calamawy as Layla El-Faouly, F Murray Abraham as Khonshu, and maybe Ethan Hawke as Arthur Harrow, though it's unlikely given how the last episode played out.

One cast member who sadly won't be returning is Gaspard Ulliel following a tragic skiing accident that occurred prior to the show's premiere in 2022. It currently remains unclear whether Marvel had plans to bring his character, Anton Mogart, in again for future episodes.

Moon Knight season 2 plot: What will the second season be about?

Moon Knight is deliberately weird and experimental, at least for Marvel, so that makes it harder than usual to predict what's coming next.

However, given that Jake Lockley – the third major Moon Knight personality – finally makes his debut in the post-credits scene, we imagine he'll continue to play a key role moving forward. But is he a friend or foe to the other alters? That final "shot" in season one certainly suggests that Jake is someone you don't want to mess with.

Brief hints at classic comic book villains like Bushman could also pay off moving forward, but this is all assuming Moon Knight even returns for a second season.

Given the show's lukewarm reception, not to mention its current status as a limited series, we wouldn't be surprised if Moon Knight — and possibly Layla as Taweret's superheroic new avatar — just appears in other MCU stories instead from now on.

And that could be quite interesting. Because, like Batman, Moon Knight can be moulded into many different styles, depending on the writer at hand. So while we could easily imagine the Fist of Khonshu fighting alongside street-level heroes like Daredevil, we can also picture him battling with – or against – the Avengers, depending on what mood he's in that day.

Following the finale, Moon Knight director Mohamed Diab revealed that he's still in the dark about what form the show might take next (via Comicbook.com). "I know nothing about what's going to happen... The thing is, I am sure that Moon Knight is here to stay. Is it going to be a film? Is it going to be a TV show? Is it going to be just joining another character in the next journey? I don't know. I wish I'm part of that story. One day, expanding that world."

If Diab does remain part of this project, he would want to kick season two off with a deep-dive into Jake Lockley's life. "I want to see his world. Everyone is so intrigued about him and [I want to] see what happens in between those blinks and who he is and what does he love and who does he love," Diab said.

"It's very interesting for me. But I love that the small things that we put all through the episode made people, every episode, waiting for Jake, waiting for Jake, waiting for Jake. But I think it, he was introduced in the right time at the very end, knowing that con should still have a hold on them."

And what about Layla? What does the future hold for the new Scarlet Scarab?

In a separate interview with Deadline, Diab hinted at what might come next for May Calamawy's character, saying: "We kept it open, because this could be Layla's beginning. I want it to be a temporary avatar. Having her partner with someone completely different from her, (like) Tawaret, would be so interesting and they can drive each other crazy.

"Her learning does she need to be a superhero now or not, because she hates the idea right now, or maybe she needs to learn it's important or not. There's so much room to go there, I don't know what's going to happen."

Of course, Moon Knight could always pop up in a Scarlet Scarab spin-off. That is, if one happens.

"All those things are up to [Marvel Studios president] Kevin [Feige], ultimately," Slater said (via Inverse). He adds that he hopes it’s sooner than later "because she’s awesome".

"She always started as a sort of Marion Ravenwood counterpoint to our Indiana Jones lead," Slater explains, referencing the iconic Indiana Jones franchise and Harrison Ford’s romantic interest, played by Karen Allen.

"But once we got the idea of giving her powers and making her the sort of first Egyptian superhero in the MCU by the end of it, we got the idea from our creative executive Nick Pepin to tie it into the Scarlet Scarab. All the pieces lined up in a really fun way. [Calamawy] came to me as an incredible actor, and she brought her to life. I can't wait to see more," Slater shared.

We keep asking Khonshu to fast-forward through the nights to speed things up, but even then, we don't expect to see new footage for Moon Knight season two for a while yet. And that's assuming the show is even renewed.
