The moon is powerful—powerful enough that its gravitational pull can control the tides, and powerful enough that it can control the length of time in a day. So it must have an effect on us humans too, right?

For millennia, and across cultural practices, the essence of the moon has been said to have a profound impact on the way we feel and move about the world. With a cycle of about 29.5 days, the energy of that big, beautiful rock in the sky is constantly changing. And if you’re at all interested in astrology, witchcraft, or spirituality in general, you can harness that energy for rituals, spell work, manifestation, and more.

Spiritually speaking, “the moon is believed to correlate to our subconscious realm, our early experiences that describe how we like to be nurtured and how we nurture others,” explains Julia Halina Hadas, a witch, cocktail creator, and author behind the latest installment in the Modern Witchcraft series, The Modern Witchcraft Book of Astrology: Your Complete Guide to Empowering Your Magick with the Energy of the Planets.

The moon also has a specific meaning in the context of one’s natal chart. “In our birth chart, the moon represents our emotions, our inner truth, our need for security, our upbringing, how we feel safe and protected,” says Aliza Kelly, astrologer, author, and creator of There Are No Coincidences: A Manifestation Deck & Guidebook. “The moon in the sky is associated with our day-to-day considerations and experiences which include our day-to-day emotions.”

With all of this in mind, how exactly can you channel the powers of the moon to help you manifest change, release what is no longer serving you, or simply soak in its unfading vitality? Two words: moon water. Here’s what it is and how to make it—and why you’ll want to.

What is moon water?

Moon water is pretty self-explanatory: It is water that has been charged with the energy of the moon. A better question than “what is moon water?” may actually be, why moon water?

According to Hadas, water is believed to hold onto vibrations and energies. This, coupled with the power of the moon, the fact that the planetary mass itself is associated with intuition and psychic ability, and the idea that each sign the moon enters holds a different meaning, makes moon water an incredibly powerful vehicle for spell work and manifestation.

“Because of the moon's proximity to Earth, because of the interpretation that it influences our day-to-day experiences, and because of the relationship we know the moon has with water and the tides, we apply those same understandings and use that to create and to work with moon water,” says Kelly.

How can I make moon water?

There is no one right way to make moon water, stress Hadas and Kelly. In its simplest form, making moon water is as easy as placing water in any size or shape container of your choosing, letting it sit under the light of the moon overnight, and using it for your magical needs.

Many practitioners will charge their moon water in direct moonlight, but not everyone has safe and easy access to direct moonlight right outside their door, notes Hadas. Because of this, putting a container of water on your windowsill will have the same effect.

Is Miss Moon not in your line of sight anywhere in your living space? That’s okay, too. “Whether or not you can see the moon, it's impacting you on a spiritual level,” Hadas says. “Visualize the moon shining upon you—visualize the moonlight traveling through you and into the water.”

When should I make moon water?

It’s a common misconception that the only time you should make and use moon water is during a full moon, but this isn’t the case. “On a spiritual level, we tend to feel [the full moon] more–making moon water at that time can be really potent for the connection the moon has with water,” Hadas explains, “but you can do it with other phases, too.”

It's important to recognize that a full moon will always be in the opposite sign of the sun. Therefore, when making your full moon water, you charge it with properties associated with that given astrological sign, says Hadas. During the new moon, however, the moon actually rises with the sun, and will therefore have the same sign as the sun does during that time of year. For example, if it's Leo season—when the sun is in Leo for roughly a month—the full moon will be in Aquarius, and consequently, any moon water made in that time will have Aquarian properties.

Moon water captured during a full moon and moon water captured during a new moon can have different purposes, too. The new moon is a time for “planting seeds and setting intentions,” says Kelly. “Infuse your intentions—what you want, what you desire—[and then] drink the water.”

The full moon, on the other hand, is a time for letting go. “You can create a container filled with [full moon] water and, instead of using it for drinking, you can write the things you want to release, put it in that moon water, maybe add a little salt to it, and then leave it out for the paper to dissolve in the water,” Kelly suggests. “It’s an alternative method of letting go, releasing, and purging for the full moon.”

Every other phase of the moon is also fair game. Hadas and Kelly were sure to stress that the only time of year you might not want to make moon water is during a lunar eclipse, as the energy from these moons may be especially chaotic and volatile. (Noted!) Mark your calendars—life is messy enough on its own.

How can I use moon water for rituals and manifestation?

There are countless ways to utilize moon water in your own personal practice. A few recommendations from the experts include ingesting the water (safe drinking water, please!), creating aromatic mists, adding it to a bath, or cleansing your home or altar with it.

You may wish not only to take in the moon water and manifest with it, but to use it as a means to draw negative energy out of your body. “Tap [the moon water] on specific places on your body if you're doing healing work that a particular moon's energy might be helpful for,” Hadas says.

Most importantly, however, have fun. As the creator of Witchcraft Cocktails and author of Moon, Magic, Mixology, Hadas crafts creative cocktails infused with the powers of the moon, and urges you to do the same. You can make moon water ice cubes, tea-infused cocktails, mocktails, and simply utilize ingredients that symbolize the moon or the sign its in.

Kelly recommends saving moon water to use with your witchy besties. After all, rituals and manifestation do not just have to be lone work between you and the moon, but rather, a spiritual collaboration.

So, grab your prettiest vase, your recently-emptied wine bottle—even a plastic cup from the kitchen cupboard will do—and get brewing. The magic of moon water is waiting for you.
