A Dumas man is dead and two others were injured after an early Wednesday crash on U.S. 287 near Cactus.
At about 7:15 a.m., Texas Department of Public Safety troopers were called to the scene of the crash in Moore County, about four miles south of Cactus, according to a DPS news release.
A 2000 Freightliner truck towing a semi-trailer and driven by Carlos Garcia, 34, of Gruver, was headed north on U.S. 287. A second vehicle, a 1995 Chevrolet S10 pickup truck driven by Jose Mendoza, 48, of Dumas, was northbound on U.S. 287 behind the truck.
Garcia slowed to turn onto a county road and Mendoza failed to control the speed of his vehicle and struck the semi-trailer, according to officials.
The semi and semi-trailer came to rest in the center turn-around of U.S. 287 facing west. The Chevrolet S10 came to rest in the center median facing north, the release states.
Mendoza was pronounced dead at the scene by Moore County Justice of the Peace Barbara Mulanax.
Two passengers in the S10, Sebastian Sierra, 63, and Pablo Gutierrez, 28, both of Dumas, were transported to Amarillo Northwest Texas Hospital. Sierra suffered non-life-threatening injuries and Gutierrez suffered serious injuries. The driver of the semi, Garcia, was not injured.
All four individuals involved in the crash were wearing seat belts. The posted speed limit is 75 and road conditions were clear and dry on a paved highway, the release states.
The crash remains under investigation by Texas Highway Patrol Troopers.
