Moores Mill fire, other agencies and civilians fight fire near Mt. Carmel

MADISON COUNTY, Ala. (WHNT) — Officials with the Moores Mill Volunteer Fire Department (MMVFD) say several agencies and some nearby civilians worked to fight a brush fire near Mt. Carmel Tuesday night.

Moores Mill VFD Spokesperson Ethan Fitzgerald said the fire started at around 5:30 p.m. Tuesday off Clearvue Road near Moores Mill Fire Station 4. He said the brush fire, which affected a minimum of two or three acres, began as a controlled burn but began to spread due to weather conditions.

“This was a pretty dangerous situation right away,” Fitzgerald said.

The MMVFD spokesperson said the department had been aware of the controlled burn ahead of time and was able to respond quickly due to its proximity to the fire station. He said when he got to the scene there were several acres burning including trees that threatened power lines.

Fitzgerald said Central Volunteer Fire Department and New Market Volunteer Fire Department both responded to the scene. Firefighters were also helped by a nearby bulldozer and excavator operated by civilians.

Fitzgerald explained that workers have been working to clear the field recently and work crews near the scene of the fire were able to help using the equipment.
