Mooresville, Martinsville schools react to ILEARN test scores

MORGAN COUNTY – Students are continuing to rebound from the pandemic disruption, new data from the Indiana Department of Education (IDOE) shows. But proficiency has yet to return to pre-pandemic levels.

The data shows the results of the 2022 ILEARN exam, the state’s new standardized assessment following the replacing of ISTEP in 2019.

Statewide, 41.2% of students performed at or above proficiency standards in English / Language Arts (ELA) and 39.4% of students were at or above standards in math. Only 30.2% of students were at or above standards in both categories.

Morgan County’s two largest school districts — the Metropolitan School District of Martinsville and the Mooresville Consolidated School Corp. — mostly performed on par with the state averages.

In Martinsville, 33.3% of students were at or above standards in ELA and 39% were at or above standards in math. A total of 25.1% of students were deemed proficient in both.

Those numbers put Martinsville 7.9% behind the state average in terms of language arts and virtually even with the state average for math.

“The testing results are indicative of the learning loss due to pandemic hurdles,” the district said in a statement to the Reporter-Times. “The district is proud of the staff and students’ resilience and perseverance through challenging times.”

The MSD statement noted that this was the second year of a pandemic recovery, and that the state's department of education is expecting to take three to five.

The district also highlighted some of the measures it will be utilizing to continue student recovery. That includes adding a reading fluency feature to its assessment tool NWEA and using its professional learning communities to “identify gaps and determine strategies for teaching students the State Standards.”

Mooresville schools

As for Mooresville schools, 39.4.% of students were proficient in ELA and 44.1% were proficient in math. Combined, 30.2% of Mooresville students were at or above standards in both subjects.

That puts Mooresville 1.8% behind the state average in ELA and 4.7% ahead of the average in math.

“We are proud to have the highest results in the county in all areas. Our students continue to show growth in both English/Language Arts and Math with the expectation to continue this trajectory in the coming years,” Holly Frye, the MCSC’s assistant superintendent for curriculum, told the Reporter-Times.

Frye did not get into any detail about the district’s plans going forward when prompted.
