MOORESVILLE — The Mooresville Consolidated School Corp. held its monthly school board meeting on Tuesday evening.

The meeting opened by playing a video celebrating the opening of MCSC's Pioneer Pavilion facility, which was recently completed after three years of planning and building.

The board then quickly approved its consent agenda without much spoken detail.

According to a handout made available to all attendees, the approved agenda includes a change to the board's policy on student medication which will require that student medication be released only to parents or parent-approved individuals over the age of 18.

Also of note are two approved field trips. One for the soccer team to do an overnight visit to the University of Indianapolis from July 18-20. The other for an overnight trip for the boys' cross country team to go to McCormick's Creek State Park on July 29-30.

The board then moved on to approving other matters, this time in more detail.

The board approved a maximum of $600,000 to make improvements to its physical education facilities.

This includes the installation of new video board at the high school football and track complex, the renovation locker rooms, and the resurfacing of the south gym's balcony flooring.

The board approved an additional $30,000 per year in spending on outdoor lawn maintenance. Parks Outdoor Maintenance, the company that MSCS employs for lawn mowing on its campuses, requested a pay increase of 20% to help cover the rising costs of labor and material. The board described the requested increase as "reasonable."

The board approved the NWEA, the formative assessment that MCSC has employed for years, for next school year. The contract will be paid for with money from the state's formative assessment grant.

Other Matters

The board opened the hearing for public comment on the school system's return to in-person learning. The board was required to do so because of their acceptance of federal dollars to help aid the transition back from online instruction. No one in the sparsely-populated auditorium had a comment.

The board voted to re-designate Neil A. Armstrong Elementary School as a PreK-6 school instead of a K-6 school. Several bonds were also approved.

Finally, the board declared several items as salvage that are no longer in use or can no longer be used.

The meeting then closed in a similar way to which it began: another video. This one was made at the 2022 alumni banquet and celebrated 100 years of the MCSC's impact.

The next school board meeting is scheduled to take place at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 12.
