Mooresville schools cut ribbon on new Pioneer Pavilion fitness center

MOORESVILLE — The Mooresville Metropolitan School District hosted a ribbon-cutting Friday, June 3, to celebrate the completion of its new Pioneer Pavilion.

The 60,000-square-foot facility, located between the middle and high schools, includes a gymnasium, an elevated fitness track, a weight room, locker rooms, new classrooms and an expanded cafeteria that serves both middle and high school students.

The district funded the $14.9 million design and construction of the project with no tax increase to their current debt service, school officials said. Performance Services, an Indianapolis design builder, was selected as the designer in 2020, and local construction company Sunco Construction was chosen as the builder.

Following a naming contest, Mooresville freshmen students Craig Teike and Kalyn Bunch submitted the winning name for the project, "Pioneer Pavilion," in April 2021.

"Some college gyms aren't this nice," Dr. Jake Allen, assistant superintendent of Mooresville schools, said of the new facility. "Our strength and conditioning program is growing, which serves as the foundation of our athletics."

School board president Dr. Bill Roberson said the district has seen tremendous growth over the past decade, all without having to raise taxes.

"It takes a vision, a commitment and support from the community," Dr. Roberson said. "And we have that support here in Mooresville."

Dr. Allen said the new facility will help Mooresville stay competitive with neighboring school districts, including Plainfield, Center Grove and Decatur Township.

"When new families move into the area, we want to show them that while we still have a small-town feel, we don't lose any opportunities," he said. "That's what we want for our kids and for our families."

The district also announced the opening of the Pioneer Practice Facility, which is located behind the middle school and includes space for additional athletics programs.
