Moped driver killed in crash on I-95 in Jasper County, coroner says

William Justin Gore, a 41-year-old from Florida, was killed in a crash on I-95 near Ridgeland when his moped was struck by a Jeep, according to the Jasper County Coroner’s Office.

The collision took place around 12:30 a.m. Thursday as both vehicles were traveling north on the interstate around mile marker 15, about two miles south of Ridgeland. The 2016 Jeep struck the moped from behind, according to Lance Cpl. Brittany Glover of the SC Highway Patrol (SCHP).

Gore was pronounced dead at the scene, said Jasper County Coroner Willie P. Aiken III. Funeral arrangements will take place in his hometown in Florida.

State law prohibits mopeds on roadways with a speed limit greater than 55 mph, as most models cannot surpass 30 mph. I-95 has a speed limit of 70 mph through Ridgeland.

SCHP is investigating the crash. A spokesperson could not immediately offer information about whether the driver of the Jeep will be charged in the incident.

Thursday’s crash marked the 12th traffic fatality in Jasper County this year, according to data from the SC Department of Public Safety.
