A driver, who later fled the scene, hit and killed a moped driver Saturday afternoon near Cascade Park in Chesapeake, police said.

The driver of a 2005 Ford Taurus was traveling southbound on Hoover Avenue around 3:30 p.m. Saturday when they turned left onto Buckland Street and struck the moped driver, Chesapeake police said in a news release. The moped driver was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Witnesses followed the Taurus driver, who has not yet been identified, as they fled the scene, continuing to the 1800 block of Martin Avenue, Chesapeake Detective K. Pacheco said. At this location, the driver left the vehicle and went to the rear of the residence. Officers later arrived and arrested the driver.

Police said the investigation is ongoing and charges are still pending.
