After 8 inches of snow fell over the weekend the Milwaukee Department of Public Works declared its first snow emergency of winter and issued over 2,000 citations as a result.

This is the first time a snow emergency has been called in two winters and is expected to stay in effect through the beginning of the week.

As of Monday, DPW spokesperson Brian DeNeve said the department has issued 2,073 citations during the snow emergency.

What does a snow emergency mean?

A snow emergency is called after a heavy snow and, among other things, restricts parking to allow the city to move snow off the streets.

One of the primary restrictions that come with a snow emergency is that no parking is allowed on main streets in the city from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.

For other parking restrictions drivers are encouraged to read street signs for guidelines on winter parking instructions in areas they are trying to park.

Can I park on side streets?

According to the DPW, anyone in Milwaukee seeking to park overnight on a side street must first have an overnight pass and follow the following instructions:

“Even-numbered calendar days (before midnight) a vehicle with a valid night permit must be legally parked on the side of the street with even house numbers; on odd-numbered calendar days (before midnight) a vehicle must be parked on the side of the street with odd house numbers.”

This alternating system allows for snow plows to work on both sides of the street.

Parked vehicles should be as close to the curb as possible so as to stay out of the flow of traffic. This includes the streetcar route and other city roadways.

More off street parking will open in the meantime

The DPW has also designated certain Milwaukee Public School lots to be used as temporary off-street parking. A list of these schools is available here.

All vehicles must be moved from MPS lots by 7 a.m.
