LANCASTER — Youth football camps are all about learning the game's finer points and having fun.

The energy and enthusiasm, as well as all the smiling faces on the campers' faces, were undeniable during this week’s Lancaster Gales Youth football Camp at Fulton field.

Led by Lancaster football coach Bryan Schoonover, his staff and varsity football players, the campers – K-2, third-and-fourth graders, as well fifth-and-sixth graders – went through several stations of fundamental drills, but more than anything, it was apparent the campers were having a lot of fun getting coached by the varsity players.

There were 100 more campers at this year’s event than last year. In all, over the three-day camp, there were 255 campers.

Campers were thrilled when they were able to go into the locker room and get their picture taken with some of the varsity players, as well as put a varsity jersey and helmet on.

Schoonover couldn't have been more pleased with how the camp went and said how important it is to help build the program from the ground up. The seventh and eighth-grade teams also held a camp on the practice field with the varsity coaches coaching them.

"Anytime you are trying to build a culture and you are trying to build a family, the number one thing is being together, and these are opportunities for everyone at every level to be together and have fun and enjoy the game of football," Schoonover said. "I think it is going to be great for the growth of our program. There are so many positives and upsides to it, that it's kind of hard to put into words how important this is for our program and our kids and every kid that is in our youth program."
