Thursday's announcement came in the middle of the peak period of the Atlantic hurricane season and less than a week after a sales tax holiday for disaster preparedness ended.

Portable generators costing $3,000 or less were included in the sales tax holiday and are common items purchased by Florida residents who face power outages associated with hurricanes.

Why are the portable Generac generators being recalled?

The recalled generators’ fuel tank can fail to vent adequately from the rollover valve, causing the gas tank to build up excess pressure and expel fuel when opened, posing fire and burn hazards, according to Generac.
