“In addition, 38 assorted titles offered were selected by the young readers to take home as well,” Nancy Williams, event organizer, said. “The American Library Association reminds us that children growing up in homes without books are, on average, three years behind children in the homes with lots of books.”

The event was offered by the Altrusa International Foundation of Monroe.

“(We) would like to thank Bill McCloskey for his delightful reading, Donna Bruck Hwang  for her energetic banjo, and Martin & Montana for donating the ice cream sundae cups,” Williams said.

Martin & Montana also donated the books.

In 1990, the Monroe City Council named the park in honor of Altrusa.

“We are proud to continue serving the Monroe community for over 70 years,” Williams said. “2022 Altrusa Loves Literacy Project is just one of our community service efforts this year.”
