More than 80 local school options featured at Las Vegas School Choice fair

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Parents and students will have a chance to look at more than 80 local school options and community resources to find the right educational fit in a weekend school fair.

The Las Vegas School Choice Fair will take place Saturday, Jan. 20 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and will include dozens of school booths, speakers, free snacks, and kid-friendly fun. It’s expected that 2,000 people will attend.

There will be representatives from charter, public, private, and even micro-schools in attendance. Information will be available in English and Spanish.

Valeria Gurr from the Nevada School Choice Coalition said it’s important for families to know their options. She said if a family is from a lower-income household or is assigned to a zip code where they have concerns about the quality of education, they can learn about alternatives.

Gurr suggests parents ask questions about any school they are considering for their children.

“What extra curriculum do they have? Stats on kids graduating? Kids are behind in math and reading; not proficient at any grade level. So, with that, we need to raise the bar and come prepared with the right questions. Finding a school is a very personal decision.”

Clark County School District’s magnet schools are also a choice for some parents. Although the application period closed last week, there is the possibility of a late application period at the end of March.

Besides educational resources, the fair will also offer activities for kids and their families including a photo booth, face painting, and scavenger hunts. The fair also provides information on how families can get aid for schooling through the Opportunity Scholarship. It’s recommended you register at this link if you’re interested in attending the fair.
