More blood donors needed amid blood shortage: Red Cross of Illinois

ILLINOIS (WCIA) — The Red Cross of Illinois is urging people to continue to donate blood or platelets to help the nation recover from a historic blood shortage.

In January, the American Red Cross announced that they were facing their worst blood shortage in two decades. This was further impacted by severe winter weather later that month.

Officials said since then, thousands of donors have come forward to help reverse the trend. However, as many places across the U.S. aren’t yet in the clear from winter weather impacts, the Red Cross is encouraging even more donors to make appointments to ensure hospitals can remain well-stocked with blood products.

To sweeten the deal, all those to donate blood, platelets, or AB Elite plasma to the Red Cross throughout February will receive a $20 Amazon gift card.

Red Cross officials said they are especially in need of platelet donors and type O blood donors, though all blood types are welcome.

To donate, make an appointment online at RedCrossBlood.org, through the Red Cross Blood Donor App, or by calling 1-800-RED CROSS. You can also attend any of the upcoming blood drives listed below:
