MERIDIAN TWP. — Southbound Okemos Road between Lake Lansing and Haslett roads will close Tuesday for another construction project coming to the township.

East Lansing Meridian Water & Sewer Authority is closing the road to southbound traffic until mid-November to build out water mains and build more capacity for the township’s water system, Assistant Township Manager and Director of Public Works Dan Opsommer said.

He said the road will remain open for northbound traffic and the most disruptive part of the project will probably be in November, when Lake Lansing Road is closed two or three weeks when the project taps into the raw water main under the road. This will cause people to detour to Marsh or Park Lake roads.

Then next year there will be a second phase of the project on Okemos Road between Haslett Road and the Inter-Urban Pathway, he said.

“We certainly appreciate everyone’s patience,” he said, for the “overwhelming amount of construction” in the township.

An Ingham County Road Department project to replace the over 95-year-old bridge over Red Cedar River between Mt. Hope Road and Clinton Street is also underway, with Okemos Road traffic detoured until an estimated completion date in November.

The project includes replacing the existing bridges with a five-lane, single-span bridge, and Mt. Hope intersection reconstruction, traffic signal and sidewalk/ramp reconstruction.

There’s also the Michigan Department of Transportation’s Grand River Avenue, also called M-43, 18-month construction project in the heart of the township.

The approximately $14.7 million project on 3.25 miles of roadway started in April and has an estimated completion date of June 2023.

Work includes joint and crack repairs, intermittent curb and gutter replacement, spot drainage repairs, Americans with Disabilities Act compliant sidewalk ramp upgrades, pedestrian island installation, pavement marking upgrades and traffic signal improvements, according to the department’s website.

Opsommer said the township’s website is the best resource for people to get updated information on the various projects in Meridian Township.

“We want motorists to be patient so everyone can be safe, especially in the construction zones,” he said.
