UPDATE: More details, 4 identified in Armstrong County fatal crash on US 287 Friday

The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) is investigating a head-on crash in Armstrong County involving an SUV and a semi-trailer early Friday that left four people dead.

According to a news release issued from DPS on Tuesday afternoon, the four killed in the SUV were identified as the driver, Andre Arango-Lopez, 25, of Spring, Texas, and three passengers, Fredy Mateo-Lopez, 19, Uriel Lopez Y Lopez, 19, and Kenis Lopez-Martinez, 19, all of Guatemala.

The release states that a 2016 Ford Explorer was eastbound, going the wrong way in the westbound lane on US 287. A 2012 Freightliner truck tractor semi-trailer, being driven by Abdul Mirzada, 42, of Tracy, California, was westbound on US 287, passing another vehicle when Mirzada saw the SUV approaching. The driver of the semi attempted to avoid the collision by veering left, but he was unsuccessful as both vehicles collided head-on in the inside lane.

All of the occupants of the Explorer were pronounced dead at the scene by Armstrong County Justice of the Peace Jana Lemons.

Mirzada was not injured.

The posted speed limit was 75 mph, and road conditions were dry and clear at the time of the crash, which remains under investigation by the Texas Highway Patrol Troopers.

According to DPS, preliminary information indicates that at approximately 4:15 a.m. Friday, an SUV was traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes of US 287 east of Claude when it struck a westbound truck tractor semi-trailer head-on.

All four occupants in the SUV were pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the semi was not injured.

An official report will be released at a future time, once next of kin have been notified.
