More than half of total needed raised for new Christmas lights in Pottsville

Mar. 20—More than half the money needed to replace the aging Christmas lights in Pottsville has been contributed.

To date, $19,816 has been put toward the $35,000 goal.

"I'm really surprised at how much has come together in a short amount of time," Pottsville Mayor Dave Clews said Monday.

In January, Clews announced that he wanted to get new lights, citing the age and condition of the lights.

The lights, which are adorned with stars and affixed on street poles by city workers, are around 20 years old.

Clews wants to order the lights by the beginning of April, something that he is confident he will be able to do.

Jerry Enders, who about 20 years ago was co-chair of the Pottsville Aglow Committee along with Elaine Stine, said in January the effort was started as a way to honor former Mayor Terence P. "Terry" Reiley, who died of leukemia, and Stine's son, the late Tim Stine, who died in a vehicle accident.

Enders and Stine went around to businesses and collected money for the lights. In all, Enders said about 35 fixtures were purchased with the donated money.

Contributions are still be being accepted for new lights.

Those interested in donating can stop by city hall, 401 N. Centre St., or mail a check to City of Pottsville, P.O. Box 50, Pottsville, PA 17901.
