More Meta job cuts and a major leadership reorg in the works: report

Meta — the parent company to Facebook — appears to be gearing-up for more staff cuts.

Tech entrepreneur Mark Zuckerberg’s social media company is exploring means to reduce its workforce, which could include moving senior leadership to lesser roles, according to the Washington Post.

The company is examining options to flatten “the layers of management” and growing the responsibilities of supervisors, which insiders reportedly believe will lead to resignations.

Rather than the sort of massive layoff announcements recently made by multiple tech companies including Twilio, Zoom, Microsoft and Google, Meta’s reductions “will likely” happen companywide over the span of several months, the Post said.

Zuckerberg previously said he didn’t foresee future layoffs after the company reduced its workforce by 11,000 jobs in November, which the 38-year-old White Plains native claimed would make further cuts less likely.

“Our management theme for 2023 is the ‘Year of Efficiency’ and we’re focused on becoming a stronger and more nimble organization,” he wrote on Facebook earlier this month.

A company representative when asked for comment directed the Post to that statement.

Zuckerberg, whose $61.6 billion worth makes him Forbes’ 17th richest person, called 2022 " a challenging year,” but expressed optimism “as long as we keep pushing on efficiency.”

IBM reportedly announced in January it would cut nearly 4,000 jobs despite an optimistic sales forecast. Days earlier, Spotify said it would cut 6% of its workforce after management confessed to being “too ambitious in investing ahead of our revenue growth.”

Google’s parent company Alphabet said in January it would part ways with 12,000 workers. Amazon reportedly planned to trim 10,000 salaries from its payroll toward the end of 2022. Social media giant Twitter also ended the year by letting go of half its U.S. staff, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Meta’s recent woes aren’t limited to job loss. Watchdog group Media Matters for America said Tuesday the tech company has profited from more than 60 ads featuring the anti-LGBTQ slur “groomer” since December. That pejorative is used by right-wing extremists to misleadingly link homosexuals and pedophiles. Meta removed dozens of ads for such hate speech in 2022.
