More rain, snow in forecast for Hawaii, most of country gets a weekend winter weather break

Every part of Hawaii is under a weather alert as a meteorological event known as a kona low continues to dump water and snow on the state this weekend.

It's been raining in Hawaii since late Friday, and flood watches are in effect through Saturday afternoon. A winter storm warning also is in effect on the Big Island through Saturday evening, with a mix of heavy snow and freezing rain expected at higher elevations.

Meanwhile most of the rest of the country can look forward to a pleasant weekend weather-wise.

"It's a really tranquil weekend of weather in the lower 48," said Bob Larson, senior meteorologist at AccuWeather.

Here's what you need to know about this weekend's weather:

Northeast

The sun will be out Saturday in cities from Boston to Bangor, Maine.

Though it'll be in the 30s and 40s throughout the Northeast, the sunny weather will be a nice break after back-to-back storms have brought rain and snow throughout the region.

The South

From New Orleans to Richmond, Virginia and parts in between, Saturday looks to be filled with bluebird skies and temperatures in the 50s.

The high in Atlanta is forecast to hit 58, while Nashville's is 54 and Richmond 52.

The Plains

It'll be a bit cloudier in the Plains, with mostly cloudy predictions in Lubbock, Texas, Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Omaha, Nebraska, all the way up to Fargo, N.D.

Temperatures should be in the 50s in the lower Plains while northern parts like Fargo and Billings, Montana should stick to the 30s.

The West

It'll be a beautiful weekend in most of the West, with sunny skies and highs in the 70s in Los Angeles and Phoenix, the 60s in Las Vegas and San Diego and the 50s in Denver.

It'll be a tad dreary farther north, with occasional rain showers expected in Oregon and Washington.

The exception will be parts of Wyoming, which will be under a winter weather advisory from 11 a.m. Saturday until 11 a.m. Sunday. Total snow accumulations could reach 10 inches in the Teton mountains, and the Salt River and Gros Ventres mountain ranges. Winds could as high as 40 mph.

"Travel could be very difficult, especially over Teton Pass," the National Weather Service said. "Patchy blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility."
