More road closures are coming to Sacramento’s Broadway district. Here’s where and why

Driving through Broadway street will be tricky for at least another two weeks with more road closures set to begin.

The closures are part of PG&E’s ongoing work to update gas pipelines on Broadway. This latest project will close both eastbound lanes between 16th and 20th streets from Monday to July 30.

Drivers are expected to exercise caution, follow detours and expect traffic delays.

“PG&E has developed a traffic control plan that allows traffic to flow in all directions, at all times, throughout the project,” spokeswoman Karly Hernandez said.

But some businesses on Broadway are frustrated about the lack of notice regarding road closures, particularly in an area with already limited parking.

“It’s already hard enough to park here as it is,” said Joe Chavarria, owner of Sacred Skin Tattoos. “And when they do this, it makes it literally impossible.”

Chavarria said he only heard about pending construction through a media inquiry on Friday.

On Saturday, The Sacramento Bee reached out to seven businesses: Noah’s NY Bagels, Queen Sheba Ethiopian Cuisine, Kyoto Sushi Bar Grill & Ramen, New Station Seafood, Lola’s Lounge, Broadway Veterinary Hospital and New Helvetia Brewing Company.

Four of the businesses said they were unaware of the road closures.

“This is my first time hearing about it … you would think that the city would at least let all these small businesses know,” said Lola Serrano, co-owner of Lola’s Lounge.

Chavarria and Serrano expressed concerns about losing customers because of the closures.

“If they’re going to be doing roadwork on Broadway, I feel like they should be doing that at a time when businesses aren’t open,” Chavarria said. “They should be doing it late at night like they do on the freeways instead of doing it while it’s our prime time to make money.”

The city recommends using detours set up along X Street and Second Avenue during the two weeks.
