More snow expected this week in Tacoma, Olympia area. Here’s what to know

The National Weather Service is continuing to warn of snow and tricky driving conditions this week for much of the state of Washington, including the Puget Sound region.

On Wednesday, the NWS issued an alert for the next several days.

The Weather Service reiterated that it will continue to snow in the Olympics and Cascades from Tuesday through the weekend. There also will be temperatures in the 20s, gusty winds and lowland snow in some areas.

The NWS advises calling 511 before traveling to check the condition of mountain passes and checking the WSDOT real-time travel data portal for alerts, closures and restrictions.

The weather was described as “... a widespread snow event for Interstate 90 highway to across eastern Washington” by Ron Miller, NWS Spokane meteorologist, in an interview with McClatchy on Tuesday.

Tacoma should expect to see snow turning to rain overnight Wednesday, with a brief break Thursday and a likely chance of more snowfall before Friday afternoon.

Olympia is more likely to see intermittent mixes of rain and snow from late Wednesday afternoon through the weekend, with the chance of snow gradually decreasing by Sunday.

Mountainous areas were under a winter storm warning, while parts of the Seattle and Tacoma region were under a winter weather advisory on Wednesday.
