More storms expected Monday as cleanup from Sunday weather continues

Jun. 14—Another round of severe weather is possible Monday afternoon and evening following damaging storms that moved through the region Sunday, according to the National Weather Service.

Showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop and move through the area from north to south between 3 p.m. and 8 p.m., meteorologist Bill Modzelewski said.

A few areas could see damaging wind gusts and large hail, he said.

Wind damage, large hail and localized flash flooding were seen with storms on Sunday.

Winds of 60-70 mph were recorded, and quarter-size hail was reported, Modzelewski said.

The Schenley Park Pool, which was scheduled to open Monday, was damaged by a mudslide caused by the storms, the city's Department of Parks and Recreation said. The pool will be closed until the damage can be repaired.

As of about 4:45 a.m. Monday, Duquesne Light was reporting more than 14,000 customers without power. The hardest hit areas were Ross, 7,849; West Mifflin, 1,914; Hampton, 815; Millvale, 572; and several Pittsburgh neighborhoods including Lawrenceville, Squirrel Hill, Manchester, and Northside.

Duquesne Light said more than 22,000 customers lost power at the height of the storms. It had lineworkers and contractors out working to restore service, and expected all customers to have service restored by 11:45 p.m. Monday.

West Penn Power was reporting fewer outages, with about 300 customers affected in Allegheny County; 23 in Butler County; 87 in Washington County; and 54 in Westmoreland County.
