More traffic detours coming to Appling-Harlem Highway, I-20 due to construction

Further delays are expected as construction continues at the interchange of Interstate 20 and Appling-Harlem Highway.

Georgia Department of Transportation noted via Facebook that starting Dec. 8, northbound trucks will not be able to use the westbound on-ramp to I-20 and will need to follow the detour at Pumpkin Center in Harlem that goes to Thomson on SR 221. Northbound passenger vehicles will be able to use the westbound on-ramp.

Before the traffic shift, southbound vehicles on US 221 had to use the Pumpkin Center detour and use that roundabout to come around and access the eastbound on-ramp to I-20.

This is part of the ongoing project to improve and replace parts of the interchange. The project is expected to be "substantially completed" by the end of December.
