Bekah Shoemaker was not able to play in the Lenawee County Softball All-Star game Wednesday.

She wasn’t going to pass up the chance to play in the statewide game next week.

The Morenci graduate was selected to play in the Division 4 game in Wednesday’s Michigan High School Softball Coaches Association All-Star game at Davenport University Softball Stadium in Lansing.

Shoemaker is the only player from Lenawee County to be selected to play in the games. There are four all-star games starting at 10 a.m.

The Division 2 game is at 10 a.m., followed by the Division 3 game at noon. The Division 4 all-star game begins at 2:30 p.m., with the Division 1 game ending the day at 4:30 p.m.

“I think it is a great opportunity and I am honored to be invited to play in the game,” Shoemaker said.

While she has no teammates from Lenawee County, she does have three from state runner-up at Tri-County Conference champion Whiteford – Berlynn Keller, Ambrelle Billau and Anna VanBrandt.

Shoemaker had a great three-sport career at Morenci, starring in volleyball, basketball, and softball.

“She had a solid career in all three sports,” said Morenci softball coach Kay Johnson. “I’m excited for Bekah that she gets to play in the game. It’s fun for the players to meet the top players from all over the state.”

This past season, Shoemaker was named First Team All-TCC. She batted .438 with a county-best seven home runs. She scored 43 runs and had 30 RBIs. She also had six triples, tying for the county lead.

Shoemaker said her favorite sport is softball.

“I have always enjoyed softball,” she said. “I love the competitiveness of the game. I have the best softball coaches, Kay Johnson and (assistant) Renae Schaffner. They have made these past four years so enjoyable. It was an honor to play for them.”

Shoemaker played catcher for the Bulldogs for four seasons, including on the 2021 team that reached the regional finals.

“That was definitely my favorite memory,” she said.

Shoemaker will attend Adrian College to study physical education and health. She plans to play club softball at the school.

Johnson said Shoemaker will fit in playing against the top seniors in the state.

“She is outgoing and a competitor,” she said. “It always amazes me how each team bonds and supports each other in a two-hour period. She will enjoy every minute of it.”
