Morganton man struck, killed standing in eastbound lane of I-40

Jan. 20—MORGANTON — A 29-year-old man was struck and killed early Friday morning (Jan. 20) while standing in the eastbound lane of Interstate-40 near Conley Road.

Around 1:30 a.m., Jarred Von Gabriel Berdine, of Morganton, was standing in the travel lane of I-40 in Burke County and was struck by an eastbound 2013 Dodge Ram near Mile Market 99. Berdine succumbed to his injuries at the scene. The victim was wearing dark clothing and the roadway was not lighted, according to the N.C. Highway Patrol.

The driver of the Dodge, Gregory Ball II, 59, of Redkey, Indiana, was not injured.

No charges are anticipated.

During the on-scene investigation, the roadway was closed for approximately two hours.

On Monday (Jan. 16) a woman wearing dark clothing was struck and killed in Catawba County while walking in the land of travel.
